Villa Hirzel – A Unique Project Bridging Past and Present
From the very beginning, Villa Hirzel was envisioned as a place where old meets new, creating a lasting symbiosis that resonates throughout the region. A place where some are invited to relive cherished memories, while others can feel the pulse of a bygone era. Supported in part by public urban development funding, the project was brought to life over the course of nearly two years. At times, as many as five architects worked to bring the owner’s vision to reality.
Idyllic yet close to the city – Villa Hirzel is nestled in the heart of the Remspark in Schwäbisch Gmünd. Surrounded by greenery, it offers a peaceful escape from everyday life and an inspiring journey back to the glamour and elegance of the Roaring Twenties.
In addition to the complex restoration of the historic main building, one of the major engineering challenges was the construction of the Round Salon, featuring a suspended ceiling structure that demanded exceptional structural precision. The modern annex, designed with wood and glass, serves as a flexible, multi-purpose venue – primarily intended as a one-of-a-kind event space. While the exterior embraces a contemporary aesthetic, the interior beautifully mirrors the style and spirit of the 1920s, in harmony with the villa itself.
For the hotel, restaurant, bar, and Round Salon, Stuttgart-based architect Steffen Haas went to great lengths – both creatively and geographically. The interior design, entirely in the style of the Golden Twenties, was curated from across Europe. Haas drew inspiration from Stuttgart to Barcelona to New York in shaping the vision of Villa Hirzel.
Visitors unanimously agree: “A more successful revival of an era is hard to imagine.”
